Media Conservator
David M. Walker
My name is David M. Walker. I am a Fulbright Specialist, educator, and audiovisual preservation engineer dedicated to the preservation, digitization, and restoration of at-risk sound recordings. My work focuses on the long-term care of magnetic tape, grooved media, and field recordings, as well as the design of sustainable preservation workflows for archives, museums, and cultural organizations.
For nearly twenty years I have partnered with leading institutions, communities, and artists to stabilize and digitize thousands of endangered media assets. This includes building preservation labs, training emerging professionals, and supporting international capacity-building projects in the United States, Georgia, and Taiwan. I approach every project with a combination of technical rigor and a deep respect for the histories and living traditions embodied in recorded sound. I also take great joy in learning about new languages and cultures through the stories carried in recorded media and in championing the communities that create and sustain them.
Featured Projects
Recent work includes international collaborations and preservation initiatives that bridge technical practice with cultural exchange. Below are selected projects highlighting efforts to conserve endangered sound recordings, build local preservation capacity, and advance access to recorded heritage.
Saving Music Heritage of Taiwan
In partnership with National Taiwan Normal University, I led a two-week Fulbright Specialist workshop training archivists and ethnomusicologists in the conservation and digitization of endangered recordings. The project helped establish sustainable preservation workflows and strengthened audiovisual preservation capacity across Taiwan.
Conservation of Endangered Georgian Traditional Music
Through a U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation project with the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, I helped build a media conservation lab and trained staff to preserve hundreds of hours of rare Georgian polyphonic recordings. The initiative secured irreplaceable documentation of one of the world’s most celebrated vocal traditions.
Preservation and Digitization Projects
At large government-based cultural heritage institutions, I oversee major initiatives to stabilize, clean, and digitize legacy recordings for long-term access. This includes magnetic tape rehousing, metadata workflows, and preservation digitization of historically significant collections from the mid-twentieth century.
Work With Me
I offer professional expertise in archival audio preservation, collections care, and restoration: from assessing at-risk media and designing digitization workflows to mastering and preparing recordings for long-term access. My work supports archives, museums, and artists in sustaining their recorded heritage and ensuring its continued resonance.
